Abstract / Description

There are few scientific studies in Germany concerning the specific fields of educational counseling and psychotherapy for poor families and regarding the use and suitability of services. Increasingly, however, there have been and continue to be investigations into the poor psychological and health situation of children from impoverished families, not least because of the enormous costs for the economy. The present article briefly reports on several scientific results concerning impoverished living conditions and the epidemiology of psychological traits among children and offers its own assessments. We discuss in greater detail subjective experiences and results of professional information exchange on psychotherapy and counseling for children of impoverished families as part of youth welfare services in Germany. We present contexts, conclusions, and examples that reveal a qualitative gap in psychosocial services. Alternatives for better approaches are proposed on various levels.
