Beabsichtigung und Ausführung prosozialen Handelns: Merkmals- versus Handlungstheorie?

Abstract / Description

The present study deals with the question whether the intentions of adult daughters (N=673) to behave prosocially towards their mothers can be predicted from the same variables as the prosocial behavior itself, or whether different kinds of predictor variables are necessary. The kinds of variables focussed on are general characteristics of the person and her social environment on the one hand and on the other hand specific cognitions related to the prosocial behavior in question. Path analysis of the data suggests that the intention to behave prosocially more strongly than the behavior itself depends on situation-specific cognitions, whereas the behavior itself is - in accordance with action theory - primarily a function of intentions. Over and above intentions however, other variables play a significant role in predicting behavior: competences to conduct the behavior in question, amount of prosocial behavior of the same kind conducted in the past, and quality of the family relations.
