Wilhelm Wundt (1832 – 1920): Gründervater ohne Söhne?

Abstract / Description
Wilhelm Wundt founded experimental psychology as a discipline and became a pioneer of cultural psychology. He developed, essentially influenced by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the first comprehensive and uniform theory of the science of psychology, and suggested a varied, multimethod approach and perspectivism. Possibly the most important reasons for Wundt's relatively low influence might lie in his ambitious epistemologically founded conception of psychology and in the level of difficulty involved in his wide-ranging methodology. Through his definition of "soul" as an actual process, Wundt gave up the metaphysical idea of a „substantial carrier"; his „psychology without a soul“ was heavily criticised by several contemporary and later psychologists and philosophers. Wundt's assistants and colleagues did not adequately reference his comprehensive scientific conception of psychology in their books; nobody in this circle developed a creative continuation of Wundt's basic concepts. Here, during the founding phase of university psychology, he already argued for a highly demanding meta-scientific reflection – and this potential to stimulate interdisciplinarity and perspectivism (complementary approaches) has by no means been exhausted.
