Group performance: A confrontation of a proximate with an ultimate evaluation

Abstract / Description
Two traditions of thinking should be combined: The classical small group research and the theory of evolution. The small group research has identified many losses of performance in the past fifty years. At the moment it concentrates more intensively on process gains in groups. The theory of evolution is perceived more intensively in social psychology in the last years. If one assumes that human life mostly takes place in groups then it is to be explained whether the found process losses in groups might be evaluated differently from an evolutionary perspective. It appears that proximate losses in groups are ultimate gains for the single individual. These losses must be taken into account from a proximate perspective. They are to be expected in naturally interacting groups because they are selection advantages from an ultimate view. Process gains which are expected from groups have to be constructed by specific group facilitation techniques.
