Abstract / Description
The Authoritarian Personality is a milestone study in social science research. From a series of research and investigations, conducted in 1945/46, emerged a study, which had to pass controversies and delays until its publication in 1950. Theodor W. Adornos involvement in this research appears to be less central than has been frequently assumed. Gradually, Erich Fromms important contribution to the theoretical foundation and methodology for the study of authoritarianism was recognized. Nevertheless, in many publications it is acceptable to neglect Erich Fromm and Adornos co-authors major contribution. During the fifties, the Frankfurter Institut fur Sozialforschung IfS has conducted two interview- and questionnaire-based studies pertaining to authoritarian personality issues. However, in further studies innovative research perspectives were not evident and the most obvious task, to investigate former perpetrators and supporters of National Socialism was not realized. The most probable of these deficits motive were based on Adornos view of empirical social psychology and differential psychology. However, the expertise of both are indispensable for such research programs. This historical review of the authoritarian personality demonstrates why there has been so little innovative and comprehensive research on the subject in postwar Germany.
