Theoretische Psychologie – Eine Systematik der Kontroversen

Theoretical Psychology – A systematization of controversies

Abstract / Description

Theoretical Psychology – in the sense of Theoretical Biology or Theoretical Physics – does not exist. The diversity of theories is evident, and contradictory philosophies of science as well. Key controversies were investigated in three ways: (1) Significant contributions and conceptions of empirical psychology (directions, programmes, ”schools” ) are examined with respect to basic postulates and principles, i.e., epistemological and methodological presuppositions. Besides Kant, Herbart and Fechner, this investigation is mainly concerned with outstanding contributions from German language psychology between 1874 (referring to Wundt, Brentano, and Freud) and the Second World War. Aspects of the more recent discussion are also included. (2) The noteworthy and recurrent debates on a ”crisis” and renewal in psychology disclose significant attitudes and lead to sociological and psychological issues. (3) Bibliometric and other scientometric methods, together with a re-analysis of representative survey data, reveal attitudes, show trends and indicate to what extent certain points of view are recognized. In systematizing such key controversies the following distinctions seem to be appropriate: ontological (metaphysical) controversies; epistemological controversies (including categories and category mistakes); controversies about philosophy of science and issues in methodology. Furthermore, in research and applied psychology controversies exist about adequate strategies and the weighting of criteria and effects. The investigation shows that psychology lacks a consistent basis for building a meta-theory which aims at unifying heterogeneous presuppositions and postulates – and that such integration or unified conception cannot be expected. Therefore, the task of Theoretical Psychology remains to disclose the key controversies, to acknowledge, to specify, and to evaluate the implications in psychological research. The elaboration of key controversies contributes to the discussion on categorically different frames of reference (and their meta-relations) and the necessary perspective-taking as well. Accordingly, the conception of Theoretical Psychology as systematization and discourse about key controversies leads to basic issues in methodology, and, as a consequence, could guide teaching and training in scientific psychology. – This book resumes the previous books Zur Kategorienlehre der Psychologie (2013) and Wilhelm Wundt (2011).
