Towards hypotheses: Abduction illustrated by an example from research on computer-based mathematics classrooms

Abstract / Description
The paper addresses abduction as logical procedure for gaining hypotheses in
qualitative research in mathematics education. Abduction is considered to be the very
way towards (scientific) knowledge. Illustrated by an example from my research I look
into the process of generating a hypothesis which makes sense of puzzling data. In
the following parts I address the issues: preceding knowledge and examination of the
hypothesis by deduction and induction. As for the understanding of the example itself
I briefly sketch the research from which it is taken and the context of that research,
i.e. computer-related research in (mathematics) education.
