Abstract / Description
Is delinquent behaviour the result of stable individual characteristics of a person or the result of specific circumstances of the social environment? This old, but still actual controversy is the background of the present analysis of the Tübingen Criminal Behaviour Development Study (TCBDS). The study examines the criminal careers of 200 young inmates and 200 young adults selected on a representative basis. Information about the criminal history and the social development were collected from birth up to the age of 45 years. The analysis refers to the "age-graded theory of informal social control" from Sampson and Laub and the "general theory of crime" from Gottfredson and Hirschi. The findings indicate that: 1) There are many changes and turning points in the criminal behaviour over the life course. 2) The development of criminal behaviour in adulthood is not determined by childhood characteristics and experiences. 3) Desistance of crime is related to a change of the whole life style. Both, continuity and change of criminal behaviour can be explained by changes in the social bonding.
