Abstract / Description

Bibliometric methods are applied to follow the changes in internationality and international dissemination of psychological research from the German-speaking countries during the course of the 20th century. A short introduction to the subject and methods of epistemology, focussing on its application to psychology and on the relatively young discipline of bibliometrics, is followed by a detailed discussion of the possibilities and limitations of bibliometric indicators. Historical analysis of the prevalence of different languages in psychological publications shows the declining eminence of the German language in international psychology and the rising adoption of English as the universal scientific language. These changes can also be observed in an analysis of the annual speeches by the presidents of the APA and the DGPs. The international impact of research from the German-speaking countries has been described as unsatisfactory, compared to the resources invested. As one possible solution to the problem, increasing the number of publications in English, led to a controversial discussion in Germany in the 1970s concerning the question in which language to publish ("Sprachenstreit'). In light of this ongoing discussion, especially with regard to Gigerenzer et al.'s (1999) proposals on ways to advance the international reputation of psychological research from the German-speaking countries, the introduction of empirical data to back up the various arguments is necessary. A sample of university teachers from the German-speaking countries is analyzed concerning their publications and the reception of them. They are divided into cohorts by the year of their lecturing qualification ("Habilitation'). In addition, another bibliometric study shows the effects of the internationalization of the journal "Psychologische Forschung' (titled "Psychological Research' since 1974) on its international reception and compares its bibliometric figures to the "Journal of Experimental Psychology — General'. The primary focus of the dissertation is the description of the total concept, the implementation, and the analysis of the ZPID-Monitor, a bibliometric assessment procedure to document changes in the international dissemination of psychology from the German-speaking countries since 2000. The ZPID-Monitor measures the number of internationally visible publications, the impact (via citation analyses), and other internationally relevant activities of a sample of university teachers from the German-speaking countries. ZPID-Monitor results for 1999—2001 are presented and discussed. The dissertation concludes with a summary of the historical and current data presented in the context of the ongoing internationality debate in German psychology. The discussion focuses on the questions of which conclusions can be drawn from bibliometric indicators when developing measures to advance the internationalization process. Also discussed are the advantages and disadvantages of such measures, and the effects they may have on research, teaching, and practice in German psychology.
