Abstract / Description
The present paper deals with the correct formulation and empirical test of moderator hypotheses. It is suggested that the formulation of moderator hypotheses is most useful if based on theoretical grounds. Systematic search for moderator variables for purely exploratory reasons is advised against. Moderator hypotheses are discussed with respect to both, discrete and con-tinuous variables. In both cases, a statistically significant interaction effect of the predictor variable and the moderator
variable on the criterion variable is considered critical evidence
in favor of the moderator hypothesis. Data from a study on the helping behavior of adult daughters towards their mothers are presented to show (a) how a hypothesis has to be formulated in order to be a moderator hypothesis, (b) which Statistical analyses are (and which are not) appropriate to empirically test the moderator hypothesis, and (c) how the results of these analyses have to be interpreted properly.
