Abstract / Description
ten.
Reproach of seif infliction ("blaming the victim") as a way of attributing res-
ponsibility for critical life events is discussed with reference to two motivational
constructs: the belief in ajust world (LERNER 1980) and the hypothesis of defensive
attribution (WALSTER 1966, SHAVER 1970). Parts of a questionnaire study with
126 subjects (ohne third of the sample students, two thirds employees) are reported.
The question was to which extent responsibility for five different classes of events
(unemployment, traffic accidents, lung cancer, intestinal cancer, leukemia) is allocated
to five different categories (the victim himself, fellow men, society, fate, and Chance).
The results show (1) that attributions of responsibility depend on the kind of event in
question and (2) that individual differences are consistent across the events to a certain
extent. To find out the psychological meaning of the generalized tendency to blame
the victims for having caused their own misery it was correlated with beliefs in justice,
perceived controllability, and vulnerability as well as cognitive-emotional appraisals
(optimism, confidence in one's own coping competencies, invulnerability, resentment).
The empirical fmdings are consistent with the motivational constructs mentioned
above.
