Noch bevor auf dem Symposium der Internationalen Erich-Fromm-Gesellschaft 1988 in Locarno Alfred Häsler Teile aus ?Schritte zum Sein?, dem nachgelassenen Kapitel zu Haben oder Sein (vgl. E. Fromm, 1989a) las, gab Rainer Funk am Podium die einzig denkbare Antwort auf die Frage, aus welchen Gründen seinerzeit Fromm dieses Kapitel zurückgezogen hatte: Er befürchtete, damit einer problematischen Nachfrage nach therapeutischen und meditativen Techniken entgegenzukommen - problematisch insofern, als dieses, auch als ?Psychoboom? bezeichnete Phänomen die Tendenz erkennen ließ, das ihm zugrunde liegende Bedürfnis nach Seelenheil übermächtig werden zu lassen. In der Konsequenz dessen lag es, dass zum einen an der Ebnung und Verkürzung der Heilswege gearbeitet wurde, zum anderen gesellschafts- und selbstkritisches Denken als Ballast abgeworfen wurde. Deutlich wurden entsprechend irrationale Züge etwa an der einflussreichen Sekte des Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh: In dem Bemühen, einer Welt voller Unterdrückung, Ausbeutung und Gleichschaltung zu entkommen, verloren seine Anhänger die Sensibilität, Anzeichen davon auch noch innerhalb des Ashram und bei sich selbst als einem Abkömmling eben dieser Welt zu erkennen. Damit bereiteten sie den Boden für den ?therapeutischen Polizeistaat? von Oregon, wie ein Kritiker ihn nannte, in dem sich, ins Groteske verzerrt, die irrationalen Züge jener Gesellschaft, der man auf diesem Wege zu entkommen glaubte, nur wiederholten.

To mark the occasion of the publication of the first volume of Fromms ?PosthumousWritings? bearing the title ?From Having to Being? (German edition: Vom Haben zum Sein published by Beltz, 1989), this report first sketches the background behind the non-academic reception of Fromm in connection with the esoteric wave. Fromms decision to delay publication of the manuscript is then tied to misgivings towards positive formulations coming from the side of the Critical Theory.These misgivings are reconstructed in the form of four charges of a quite serious nature that are directed by the critical social sciences against any explicit formulation of actional perspectives; this is followed up by a critical consideration of the case for and against these misgivings. The author concludes that positive formulations are indeed an indispensable part of all political action; furthermore, that criticisms of such positive formulations can be met by insisting that they be tied to humane forms of communication. In this connection, the idea of biophilia is interpreted as an attempt to describe the psychological prerequisites for the emergence of such forms of communication. Thus a critical stance is adopted against tendencies on the part of supporters of the Critical Theory to elevate the injunction against image-making into an absolute. On the other hand, reference is once again made to the esoteric wave pursuing interpretive patterns geared to other than day-to-day realities - patterns that therefore necessarily fail to a knowledge any critical authority. To this it is objected that individual attempts to free oneself from purely affective quarters by ones own efforts are just as doomed to failure. This conclusion is drawn from the need for interpretation to which all modes of meditative experience are subject. In the authors opinion, interpretive patterns such as these do not correspond to Fromms intention either, this having been to build bridges between rationality and emotional life instead of playing the one off against the other.
